Green Building BasicsGreen building is not complicated and it is not rocket science. For the most part it is a commitment and attitude to build the most energy efficient building possible given the budget constraints, the architect's design elements and the client's desires for the project. Green building is a constantly evolving world of new products and methods to reduce the carbon footprint of what we build, while delivering the living space and finishes that are in demand for today's lifestyle.
EnvelopeThis is the most important aspect of long-term energy efficiency for a structure. CCBI excels in producing very tight buildings with thermal break between the framing and insulation cavity or interior finishes. We are also very knowledgeable in the systems needed to ensure high indoor air quality which is a problem in some new homes today. We take great care to air seal and insulate properly and then we test each home before drywall to identify and seal any weak spots. Proper window and exterior door installation is very important. This element of green building is mostly about attention to detail and does not significantly increase the cost of construction.
Recycling / Waste ReductionLong before green building was a trend, CCBI believed in sending as little to the land fill as possible. We make sure nothing is thrown away that can be used or recycled in any other way. Over 30% of all the land fill waste in the U.S. stems from construction projects; that's a huge waste of resources on multiple levels. Again, a small amount of extra effort and attention to detail in this area can produce vastly less land fill waste from every one of our jobs.
MaterialsCCBI evaluates all materials that go into a job and will recommend greener substitutes as we discover them and as budget allows. Many of the architects we work with already do this in their specifications and we help further that process. This area of green building simply requires being aware of how things are made and where they come from and being willing to take the time to consider alternatives that are more environmentally friendly and local.
SystemsThis is the area that most people think of when they hear green building. Photovoltaic electric power systems, solar hot water for domestic hot water, and geothermal heating and cooling are the items that get much of the attention. They are also the items that involve a much larger up front investment to install. CCBI has extensive experience with all of these systems and can tailor each homes' infrastructure to the client's budget and wishes. These systems, combined with the other elements of green building, can produce a net zero energy home.
